Description

A scarce silver 100 Fils of Iraq dated AH1375 (1955), struck during the reign of King Faisal II in the final years of the Hashemite monarchy.

This issue has long been recognized as one of the key coins of modern Iraqi numismatics. Contemporary accounts and auction records indicate that much of the mintage was held in bank reserves when the July 14, 1958 revolution overthrew the monarchy. Large quantities were reportedly melted in the years that followed, leaving comparatively few survivors available to collectors.

Because of this history, examples appear only intermittently on the market, particularly in higher grades, and the coin has developed a reputation as a key date of the Faisal II series.
